Chapter 2: 8 Seconds

Upon entering the rodeo grounds we all get our hands marked with a Sharpie.

It's a whole other world in the rodeo grounds.

It's not quite Oz, but it for sure ain't The City. Almost
everyone is on a horse, riding along like it was the most
natural thing a human does.

But then there are telltale signs that we have entered a potentially risky area.

Look, cows!
No Palomino, they're bulls. MAN cows.

Aw, they're so cute... Here bully, bully, bully!

This one's name is Rob's Pet. Because everyone HATES him, but Rob.

At least that's what this young cowboy said.

Aw, look at this guy! He's just soooo sweet, he doesn't even have any horns.
This is what's called a "polled" bull. They are bred to be hornless.
Never stand behind a horse, or in front of a bull. With or without horns.

He doesn't look too sweet here, does he?
Even the pick-up rider is keeping his distance.

You still think he's sweet?

Would you pet this sweet looking thing coming at you?
No thanks!

This cowboy touched him... You sure you still wanna pet him?
A bullrider's equipment and gear:
1. Rope, aka "riggin" for bareback riding.

It is coated with glycerin (rosin) to make it "stick", letting
the cowboy hang on for (hopefully) 8 long seconds.
2. Bronc Saddle

3. Gloves. Well, glove - no S.

4. Boots.

5. Spurs.

6. Vest.

7. Helmet.

7. Chaps.

It is very important to keep their assets safe.

Very.

Important.

Padding helps.

... and moral support.
The rodeo officially began with the National Anthems of the U.S.A. and Canada. Yes, riders came all the way from Canada to compete.

... and the drill team.
Let the riding commence.
Open the gate!
8 seconds on the clock.

The contest is judged by form, seat and control, giving
the bull 1-25 points, and the rider1-25 points each by two judges, 100 being a perfect ride.

Thrown off his bull before 8 seconds were up, the young bullrider gathers his equipment, and heads back to the chute.

Determined to stay on the full 8 seconds on the next ride.
